I would have to say that this is an oft quoted verse that is used to sort of “pooh-pooh” those of us who believe God for the miraculous in a given situation and pray according to that belief. It is normally argued that those of us who are continuationists are “sign seekers”. To say this is to imply, no, to say outright, that we are an adulterous and wicked group of people. That’s a broad stroke of the brush there, isn’t it? Is this even a right usage of this verse?
This isn’t an article intended to arm wrestle cessationism as much as it is written to discuss wether or not the mantra-esque usage of this verse is even proper. I’m pretty big these days on nailing “proof-texters”, though usually within my own camp of charismatic folks. But I have been sort of chafed when I hear this verse thrown around in this way, so I felt like addressing it.
So, how is it that we see people seeking Jesus for healing and being healed? How is it that men and women sought after Him for the healing of their sick (and sometimes dead) children and received it? There were those who were seeking Him to deliver their sons and daughters from demons and He complied with no reticence. He didn’t rebuke these people. There are by far many more instances where He was sought for healing or deliverance and willingy (and even lovingly) complied.
And herein lies the crux of the matter. Who did Jesus rebuke for “seeking” a sign and who is it that He was all too willing to give signs to in response to their seeking of His power? Just think about it for a second, it’ll come to you.
That’s right, it was the Pharisees and “teachers of the law” who got rebuked, not the sick and dying who were in desperate need and realized that only He could save, heal and deliver.
Too often, you cessationists accuse people of being wicked adulterers of a Pharisaical spirit who are far from it (and you yourselves may be that very thing) without really being true to the texts dealing with His rebuke of the Pharisees and those dealing with His all-too-willing compliance with those who sought that very thing from Him. How do you know the heart condition of all of those who believe God for something of a supernatural kind? Is it really right for you to make those kinds of sweeping accusations against millions of christians that you don’t even know?
I’d like to look at these Pharisees for a second. They are the one’s Jesus rebuked in Matt. 12:39. I wonder, had they ever seen Jesus perform a sign at this point in Jesus’ ministry? Yes, in fact, they had; several times. Observe:
Matthew 4:23 NIV “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.”
Synagogues….that’s where the Pharisees where on every Saturday. Surely they didn’t miss the fact that “large crowds” from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed Him, did they? No, they knew and they knew why because they had seen these things in their own gatherings weekend after weekend. Signs!! They saw them.
In Matthew 9 we see Jesus telling a man that his sins are forgiven. When Jesus pronounced this man forgiven of sin, the teachers of the law grumbled in their hearts against Jesus and accused Him of blasphemy. To prove His autority to forgive sins He gave them a sign….He healed the man right in front of them!!
In the first 13 verses of Matthew 12 we see the Pharisees and teachers of the law trying to trap Jesus. There was a man with a shriveled hand in the synagogue that day. They already, by this time, were so convinced of His healing power that they actually expected Him to do it!! Sadly, they only wished to use it against Him. Without going into all the in’s and out’s of the story, Jesus healed the man right in front of everyone. Six verses later He casts out a demon in front of the Pharisees.
THEN they had the audacity to demand a sign from Him! Absolutely incredible. They had been given many signs, but now they had it in their minds that they were going to manipulate Him into releasing His power by their own demand. These last two healings were in the same chapter that contains verse 39: “He answered, ‘A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the prophet Jonah.’” NOW we have a proper basis for understanding who this is aimed at, i.e. wicked and adulterous people who had already been shown many signs authenticating His Messianic credentials and Godhood.
But did Jesus ever say anything like this to those who joyfully looked to Him for help?
You see, the key is to look on the attitude of the ones He rebuked and the attitude of those He healed.
Bottom line, you can’t use this verse to bulwark cessationism; it just will not lend itself to you for that kind of abuse.
So then, what is a wicked and adulterous generation? What was it about these Pharisees and teachers of the law that caused Jesus to levy the most serious of indictments that can possibly be leveled at the supposed righteous ones of Israel? It is the fact that they, like their fathers before them who saw the plagues and signs and wonders of God coming out of Egypt, made demands upon God whenever they felt like it and grumbled against God and His sent one (first Moses, then Jesus). When God demonstrates Himself in front of you and you have the nerve to continue in doubt and demand that He perform, you are wicked and adulterous.
Jesus told the Pharisees that they would be given no sign except the sign of Jonah, yet He continued to perform miracles in front of them. So on the one hand they won’t be given anything and on the other they will continue to see His power. In other words, they won’t be given anything on demand. The only sign that Jesus was going to give them in response to their “demand” was His mastery over the grave but this was more a slap in their face than compliance to their wishes. In the meantime they would be given enough evidence to see full well that He was the Word in flesh, Messiah. It’s almost like when someone is pulling on a rope and yells at you, “Let go!”. You continue to hold on knowing that if you let go, they are going to eat dirt. So finally you relinquish your hold on the rope and BAM, down they go. Was it compliance with the demand to let go, or you demonstrating your power to hold the rope, let it go and then pick it back up at will?
And so it is with “the sign of Jonah”.
But remember, after saying this He continued to heal the sick and even raised the dead, as well as casting out demons. Signs, signs, everywhere signs.
See the difference? Do you see how you have been abusing this text? I don’t ask this in a sarcastic way, but I do mean to absolutely declare that using this verse as a blanket condemnation over those of us who believe for the supernatural acts of God is just that: abuse.
I guess those are all my thoughts on that for now.
Good night all,
mark jr.

Ruh roh! Now you’ve done it. I’ve always wanted to have this conversation with a few cessationist friends but didn’t have the courage.
I’d like to tell you a true story. When my kids were little, I lived 2 blocks from the boardwalk in Belmar NJ. I used to take them for walks there almost every day. One day on such a walk, a young man came up to us and snapped a photo of me. I asked him why he took my picture and he gave me a cock and bull story about being a professional photographer which I knew was false. I told him that I was a Christian, and was firm with him about what he was doing (the falsehood) and he seemed receptive to what I was saying, and seemed contrite.
The kids and I would see this guy once in a while on the boardwalk and he often stopped to talk to us and even bought cookies for my kids. He was a familiar face, and I often prayed for him. He even asked me to pray for him.
One night at home, after the children had been put to bed, I was reading the bible, and all of a sudden out of nowhere I heard the Lord’s voice telling me to PRAY. Didn’t say what for, and I thought maybe I was imagining things. But the Voice persisted, and after 5 minutes or so of this, I knew that for some reason, I had to get on my knees and pray. For what? I didn’t know, but the Spirit knew. I prayed in tongues for about a half hour and there was such an urgency in my praying that I did not stop until I got that release in my spirit. I had no idea what the episode was about.
Several years ago, my oldest daughter told me that one night when she was 5 years old (living in the Belmar house) after she had been put to bed, she couldn’t fall asleep and was looking out her bedroom window(which faced the street) and singing quietly. She said she saw our “friend” pacing back and forth in front of the house and stopping to stare at the house. And then she saw a very tall man come out of our front door and walk down the sidewalk toward our friend. Our friend ran away. My husband was not home at the time. My daughter wanted to know who the tall man was. This ripped right through me, because I KNEW what night she was talking about at that moment.
Our friend “Rick”? Look up Richard Biegenwald.

What does prayer and discernment(which you obviously did not have) have to do with miracles. The miracles are done. Jesus came here as a man. Jesus died on the cross and rose again for our sins. We are soooo greedy even in our “religion” asking for more and more. To me it is a little sad. YOU HAVE ALL. Besides that doing greater things in the future than Jesus did is also being fufilled in Science. Yes God created Science for us to do great things. Think of all the people we cure every day of diseases. MILLIONS of diseases and plagues have been stopped by man because God gave us that power in our brains. It all is so clear. JESUS dying on the cross for us is out LAST gift. Are we so selfish to ask for more than that. There is no greater gift. There is no greater miracle. Stop thinking in ways subjective interpretation is a miracle.

Thanks for sharing that testimony, Cheryl!

Satan is fully capable of supernatural signs and wonders. Unfortunately, many in the Charismatic movement have the attitude that if something is supernatural, it must be from God. There is no scriptural basis for that assumption. Satan is perfectly capable of producing powerful signs and wonders to attest his lies, and the reason such people are deceived is because they did not receive the love of the truth.

Exactly, Be very careful you miracle wanters. YOU WANTERS OF MORE AND MORE. JESUS IS ALL YOU GET.

Yeah Cheryl….all I can say is “Whoa…..”
Now if I’m a cessationist, I have to say (on what I think the scriptures teach) that this didn’t happen, or that there’s a admixture in the story.
But as myself, I say “Praise God”. He is indeed our rear guard.
I wonder what would have happened in this situation if you were a cessationist?
You’d be dead, that’s what. Raped, blugeoned, dead. Wow.
Sometimes the gifts of the Spirit can be a life and death issue for us, and in these last days that will become all the more manifest. Heck, in parts of China they can’t organize meetings for fear of the police, so if the Holy Spirit doesn’t tell you were to go for church, you don’t go. And yet it happens all the time; folks come together without planning it.
Of course, again, if I’m a cessationist I have to say that those stories are made up.
Whatever.
That’s a good quote from Prince, Bill. I think I have an article of his linked on another article of mine…can’t remember which, but it was good.
I like what Chris said in the “About” section just a moment ago about putting pebbles in peoples shoes regarding what they believe. Hopefully they’ll feel it and stop to take their “shoes” off…..maybe they’ll discover their feet aren’t even shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.
G’night,
mark jr.

GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT ARE NOT MIRACLES OR MIRACLES. Getting them because Jesus had to die for us to have them is the miracle. The gifts had not yet been given because Jesus had not been glorified. He died for us in everyway. The only miracle I see is my life and ability to love. To me that is a miracle, but it really is just God’s grace and plan for our life.

i dunno i always thought the pharisees asked for a “sign from heaven” i always thought it was similar to when the disciples asked if they should call fire down from haven and Jesus rebuked them…
I just mean, I don’t think they would be satisfied if Jesus said “Hey, Pharisee, you know that ache in your left arm, its GONE!” or “Hey, your dying grandmother is just fine!” or even “Your dead brother is waiting for you at your house” or anything
I just assumed they wanted some huuuuge heavenly sign or something. never thought of it too deeply…
and wow, that was amazing Cheryl, i had to read it a few times because i’m a bit slow…
Florence Vall // May 10, 2009 at 4:03 pm |
It does NOT say pharasie generation or population…It says “generation” US US US. ME ME ME generation The want more generation. the never satisfied generation.

Those that sought signs, ie; The Pharisees of old, were looking for the Promised One. Here He was in front of them and they knew Him not.
38And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
They placed there limited knowledge of Him strictly on OT scriptures. Even the Bible says that not all the books in the world could tell of all the things of Him, yet there are those that try to place him in the pages of one book and limit Him by their own knowledge [ intellect ] without really knowing Him [ rhema ] or truly experiencing the Living God!
I wrote a post just yesterday on something along this lines;

Love in Christ Jesus

great article.
wow Cheryl-the hair on my arms raised when I read who he was.
I wish I had understood this stuff a long time ago.
iseeitdifferently // February 6, 2008 at 8:12 pm |
Actually Jake, if they knew the OT like they should have they would have known Him. It seemed to be more of a love of the Oral Law that made them actually sidestep what the OT scriptures said about Jesus. Jesus said that Moses wrote about Him, but since they didn’t believe Moses they couldn’t believe Jesus. So I think that really they didn’t believe in the OT and that this is the reason why they couldn’t see Him.
Their law was nothing but rules made up by men and their worship was in vain. If they loved the word they would have seen Him.
At least that’s how I see it.

lbolm // February 6, 2008 at 8:47 pm |
Mark jr said “If they loved the word they would have seen Him.”
Amen!!
But, they really seemed to love the world and what they could get out of it by imposing man made laws.
Sounds a little like some of the “church” today doesn’t it.
Maybe that’s why so many have a hard time with building a relationship with the Living God!

I didn’t get to finish reading the whole thing, but I liked some of what you said. Many people who are “seeking after” God, and trying to “know God deeper,” it’s just a hidden sense of doubt of it all. People want it proven to them, so they’ll disguise it by saying “God, I want more.” Oh, and that was a point that Bill Johnson made on one of his podcasts. A good point, I might add.
God bless all of you!!!
Have you ever heard of David Van Koevering? He’s a quantum physicist, inventor, teacher, and a bunch of other things. He has a few teachings “The Physics of Worship” and “The Science of God Sounds.” They’re really good. The one I heard basically talked about the power of words, even a physical power to change environments. It’s pretty interesting.
Florence Vall // May 10, 2009 at 4:16 pm |
Unbelievable a miracle. Just kidding. I was just watching something about his quest a quantum physicist and his spirituality and how we try to sell Jesus for what he can do for us. AS IF DIEING ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS IS NOT THE ALL IN ALL. Just understanding the greatness and interconnectivety of God in everything is beyond somes understanding The gift of Jesus and His sacrifice for us is the last it is all we get. Doing greater things as promised we are doing in science. HEALINGS are unbelievable. Everything is explained through science which GOD has given us. The miracle is JESUS.

Florence Val:
You are one the most beligerent people I’ve ever come across. Nobody heard you, nobody paid attention and you have not used Scripture to bulwark your position. You have only used rhetoric from your fundamentalist, independant King James Only preachers.
Try using the bible.
