About

Who are you?
Mark Weston Harrell Jr.; husband, father, termite destroyer!

What is this blog here for?
I started it a couple of years ago just to practice writting and to ventilate some frustrations I have had over the years being a charismatic/pentecostal christian and seeing the futility that has arisen out of certain movements that I was immersed into when first saved. I’ve been in and through some stuff and as a result I believe I have a point of view about these things that you won’t hear from other folks who are critical of charismata in the church and those who hold to its continued existance for only theological reasons. I think an insiders view about this stuff is much different than going to “deception in the church dot com” or whatever else is out there of similar ilk. I was nailed by the Lord last summer by a question: “You’re an expert on all that is wrong; what are you doing that is right that will bring it about? Do you have the right to correct when you aren’t producing?” Uh, ouch.
Having said that, I do feel as though too many of us charismatics are too quick to dive headfirst into things without having made sure the dive was safe. We are too quick to accept what would possibly be revealed as unacceptable to our Holy God, if only we would investigate. We are so afraid of “blasphemy of the Holy Spirit” that we blaspheme Him by not being more careful as to what we pin on Him.

A little background?
Sure. I’m from NorCal, grew up in the East Bay Area and lived in Lake County, CA for about 6-7 years. Moved to Charlotte, NC upon God’s calling me here. I go to the most awesome church ever in the world. It’s called FIRE and it rules. I have a 12 year old daughter named Ashley, my boy named after me (3rd generation Mark Weston) and a boy named Luke Christopher on the way in early July.
I grew up in the A.O.G. church and went away from God for about 8 years, starting at the age of 15. I’ve yet to write out the testimony and need to. For a lot of folks it will be hard to swallow, but if it didn’t happen just as I claim it did, I wouldn’t be here. You’ll see why soon enough…

Are you a cessasionist or something?
No. Not even.

Then why do you criticize so many charismatic movements?
Well, admitedly, I was just a hot headed jerk when I first started this thing. I had years of irritation built up and years of watching shipwrecked lives and ministries as a result of horrible teaching and practice and just wanted to stand in front of the washed out bridge and scream and wave my arms to spare some. So I meant well, honestly, but was just way mixed up with anger and stuff. Things have drastically changed in the last year, in my spirit and the way I let it out in speech and what not. A man who’s not in control of his spirit is out of step with the Holy Spirit and a fool. I was a man of unclean lips, in that respect. That’s not to say I disagree with the conclusions I’ve reached; I haven’t my mind at all. But I now know how I can have a conversation with those I differ with without being a jerk and scaring people away.

So, what do you write about now?
Uh, stuff. I still take issue with things, but no longer feel the need to be a front line corrector. Now I prefer to just study, pray, read my bible and write what comes out of that time with the Lord. I think that as you read this blog from early days to nowadays, you’ll see the gradual change in my writtings and comments.

How old are you?
Dang you’re nosey! Wait, I’m the one making up your hypothetical questions…
…birthday is May 23, 1975 (GenX).

So then, sniff around and whatever, just be aware that you don’t need to concern yourself with telling me how my attitude and spirit stinks! It’s in the garage on jack stands!

Be blessed in the Lord Jesus,
mark jr.

  • I love your new template. Much easier to read and more professional looking.

  • Yah, I thought so to. I hated it when Sign of Jonah went to Sunburn. I couldn’t read anything….so it made me want to change mine, but he beat me to it.

    mark jr.

  • Wow. This is one of the cleanest, sharpest, easiest to read/navigate wordpress blogs I’ve seen. Nice work.

  • That look on your face,
Now I know the expressions your making when you read my comments! She said WHAT?

  • It’s funny, i don’t even need that picture, just by what you type and can totally see the look on your face, and hear your tone, that’s what comes with having you be my youth pastor for…2 1/2 years? something like that

  • [...] [Note to non-Marks: Check out Mark’s about page for reference here.] [...]

  • I came by your website from a search for “true prophetic”.
I like to refer to us as conservative charismatics and I personally was birthed spiritually in the Vineyard Church that worshipped in a Spanish Movie Theatre in Santa Monica Cal over 20 years ago. Fortunately the Lord pulled me out after 2 years there.
I commend your focus on the “true prophetic” which really is based on the simplicity of the spirit-led life since “the sons of God are “Led” by the spirit of God”.

Thank you for your time and keep up the God work!

  • Oops… that comment was intended for one of your blog entries…. I’ll repost it there.

  • If you don’t mind me asking? Are you still in the Assemblies? I thought I read in a prior post that you used to youth pastor in a A/G church? Am I incorrect? I was just wondering?
My husband and I have recently left our A/G church here in Texas and he is contemplating giving up his credentials with the Assemblies as well. A lot of things are leaving a bad taste.
I found your site through sign of jonah. I have enjoyed reading their blogs but was intrigued that you were not willing to shy away from the Baptism in the Holy Spirit issue.
My husband and I have been on a recent quest I guess you should say for “Truth”. So much of what we have seen in the last 11 years of ministry is just not adding up. Is there a prior post where you share a testimony of explanation why you began this emphasis for discernment.
    Just curious?

  • I was doing a Bible study this morning on Romans 12:6 and typed in “let him prophecy in proportion to his faith” and your web came up. Thanks for the insight.
We are new to the web, just got up last week, so our site is not well developed yet. I’m interim pastor of the church.

  • Hi Mark Jr,
After looking over your blogs on different subjects, I want to invite you to come by lbolm.wordpress.com. Please join in and give whatever you feel led by the Holy Spirit to say.

    Thanks and be blessed,
    Love in Christ Jesus

  • For some reason, your blog seems to not exist right now. I looked at it earlier…now it don’t work.

    I’ll check back later I guess…

  • Mark,

I am curious what the crisis was that brought you out of the false Charismatic stuff. If you don’t mind sharing.

  • Mark Jr.,

You shared one time in one of your posts something about Bill Johnson at Bethel and one of the great prophets of the Prophetic Movement and how they did some kind of “soul travel” or something of that nature. I can’t find that on your site. Please direct me to the post where you mention that.

    Thanks
    IBIJ

  • It’s on the Sign of Jonah. The post is over a year old. It has a picture of Bob Jones getting married to some lady who’s name I don’t know.
So go to SOJ and do a search for Bob Jones and you should find it.
    mark jr.

  • Thanks, I know the post….

  • Well, I found that post “Extended Thoughts on Bob Jones” but I can’t find the testemony part were you tell of the “projections”.
Could you please tell me again what you witnessed regarding this issue, please.

  • Uh, it was a prophetic conference in ‘99 in Redding, CA at Bethel Church. Bobby Conner was the main prophet who told everyone that Jesus told him that Y2K was going to “be worse than everyone thinks”. Yah that was a bust.

Then, in that atmosphere of falsehood, he’s laying hands on people and then goes to touching his forehead to others and many claimed to go flying through the spirit realm and were seeing the same things together. This is nothing more than an occultic practice known as Astral Projection. Well, Bobby Conner puts his forehead up on Bill Johnson’s and apparently Bill is blown away by the journey.

Keep in mind, this is done in the midst of totally false prophetic speaking which God hates and claims is delusional (Jer. 23). So this whole “head” ministry is the child of this false spirit in operation and is itself false.

At this conference Bobby Conner also claimed that he woke up one morning (some time earlier that year) and that he put his hand on his head, as many of us do when we’re first getting up, and that for some reason he felt woozy and sorta drunk. He questioned in his mind why he felt that way and claims that God said, “take your hand off your head”. He did and says he suddenly felt fine.

You see, Bobby is so “anointed” that he even makes himself drunk in the spirit.

    Yeah.

  • Thank you and oh my… Hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family. I have been looking at this site… http://kimolsen.wordpress.com/2007/09/10/is-there-new-age-religion-in-your-town-just-look-in-your-newspapers-religion-section/#comment-1297 and read what IWanthetruth posted from a link to a New Age religion called Eckankar. And I immediately remembered this testamony you had given and thought wow!

  • Hey Mark, I’ve got to say, I’m really glad to have found your blog. In reading about your past experiences in the “prophetic/revival” movement I immediately knew you were someone who’s writings I had to read. I was raised in non-denom. charismatic churches that dove headfirst into this stuff (I’m now almost thirty, so you can see that this was even before Brownsville). I ended up at a fairly well balanced A/G church in high school and graduated with a business degree from an A/G university.

I too am am a non-cessationist and believe the gifts are for today, but I’ve had a serious problem with these “prophets” for a long time. To my dismay members of my family and some members of my church are buying whole sale into these teachings, whithout first examining them in the light of scripture. I’m so glad to see that there are non-cessationists who are taking a biblical look at their teachings. It seems to me that we need to police our own. Unfortunately, their teachings permeate even a very theologically balanced foursquare church like the one we attend. We currently have a couple that has held lay-leadership positions in our church that moved to Cali. to attend BSSM (I think they’re learning how to move in “the” prophetic).
I’m always looking for fellow non-cessationists, and specifically charismatics, who actually think critically about what they belive. I also appreciate your links to some similar sites and blogs. I’m sure you probably know of these guys but I’d also recommend material by Sam Storms, Wayne Grudem, JP Moreland, and Gordon Fee. Much of what they’ve written is in the same vain as your blog. I’m looking forward to reading more of your material.

  • Hi Chris,

Are you on the west coast? I to went to a 4square until recently due to this stuff.

  • Yeah Tim I am on the west coast, specifically Washington State. I have to say that every A/G and 4square church is different in their acceptance and implementation of these teachings. They are by no means a monolith. My uncle was senior pastor of a large 4square church in the Seattle area for a long time, and he’d neve have allowed this stuff to go on in his church. Over all our church is pretty well balanced, our pastor has pastored in both charismatic and non-charismatic churches, so I believe he handles these issues with wisdom. Fortunately, the practice of most of these teachings has not taken root in our church, but I know there are some who would like it to. I just try to submit to pastoral authority and not be devisive. Obviously if there was completely unbiblical teaching going on I’d talk to the pastor about it, but thankfully I don’t forsee that happening. My goal is to be a loving but honest member of the body while “putting a stone in the shoe” of those in my cirlce of influence as to what they really believe.

  • Chris,

Just wondered, I am in Oregon… went to a very active “successful” 4square until I got the “red flags” about the Bridal Paradigm teaching that were being pesented and the IHOP stuff they wanted to do which led me to research what this was really all about which then led me to find out more about the Purpose Driven Model which this church is very much a part of.

I, just in good conscience, couldn’t continue with them any longer and felt that it was the right thing to do, leave. Actually this is the second church that I feel the Holy pirit has led me to leave. I seem to have these 10 to 12 year runs and then I am moved to another body. I have been Baptist, Episcopalian, AG, Quaker, 4square. Still looking for a good place and I know the Lord will lead me to where I am suppose to be.

    Blessings on you

  • Mark,
I just posted this over at Greycoats. I was thinking of you and the situation your family is in right now, so I copied it and brought it over to share with you.

I happened upon a broadcast last night with Casey Treat on it. He is a pastor out in the Seattle Washington area and was diagnozed with Hepatitus C . His story and testimony was awesome in the fact that he struggled with either standing firm and “waiting on The Lord”, or using every means available to fight this killer disease. After some time with his church elders and especially his wife, he chose to use EVERY means available. That included physically and spiritualy. You can probably find out more about it if you look him up.
The main thing that one can get is this, God is Love and God is Faithful. God will see us through all trials . Casey Treat’s decision to fight back with ALL means had NO baring on God’s attitude toward Casey. God honored the prayers and guided Casey, his family and the flock that Casey is over, through what many would have just given up on.
As many of you know from my previous post, I believe that God is still into the miracle healing, for HE alone is the Master Physician. There comes a time when we all have to fully rely on God to guide us through a crisis. Death is not something to play around with. We must be fully in tune with God the Father and seek His will in a matter. Casey Treat did just that, and because he got the full counsel of God on the matter, he got the help he needed to overcome the enemy and God The Father was there with him the whole trip!

    Love in Christ Jesus
    Jake

  • Hey Mark,
I was walking our dog tonight shortly after reading your email. The sky was full of stars. God is still in His heaven, Mark. Though it might not seem like it. Wheither He chooses to heal through modern medicine or through a supernatural sudden healing, he’s with you. The battle is the Lord’s.

  • hey just noticed that you are from the east bay and I know a Chris Harrell from Fremont, any relation?
i am from Fremont too. like some of your stuff. be blessed.

Hey Mark. I thought you might find this interesting: http://www.darinhufford.com/article.php?id=19

It is a first-hand account of a man and his wife’s visit to Lakeland. Take a read, I think you’ll find it interesting.

    Grace to you,

    Glenn

  • That was a good article, though rough around the edges. We need folks who have no bias to proove to give a more honest opinion of these things.

And most of all, though he seems to be a christian man (I can’t judge his walk because he drops a few cuss words) he also seems to bring a view that reminds me of my own unsaved way of seeing the church. The whole unreality of these lengthy song services and hype never impressed me. I had to get saved DESPITE the charismatic church. It was really a hinderance and still, in large, seems to be.

    Thanks Glenn.

Yeah, the shameless cuss words weren’t a good indication of what is in his heart (Matt 12:34, 35). And it almost seemed as if he was purposely indicating throughout the article in some of the things he said that we wasn’t actually a devoted believer at the time of it’s writing.

“…he also seems to bring a view that reminds me of my own unsaved way of seeing the church” is exactly what I was thinking. Not that this is the way that I saw church when I was unsaved, but I know this is how SO many view the church today who were brought up “Christians” or in a “Christian” home (particulary “pentecostal”).

Just a note, our ministry recently received a report of a brother who’s life the Lord transformed greatly at the Brownsville Revival presumably under the repentance preaching that went on under Mike Brown’s time there. I’ll post his testimony of it here because it’s a bit hard to summarize:

    This is from Ken:

“Well, shortly after Lakeland started I was posting here as a “supporter”. I had my life transformed in the Brownsville revival, and knowing that many who were offended at Lakeland were from the same camp as those who opposed Brownsville, I naturally took what I thought to be “the proper side”. Although I did say I was put off by the hype surrounding Lakeland, I was open to the idea that it was “from God”, and I saw criticism from this board that I chalked up to mostly phariseeism.

Then a couple of weeks ago I saw this video on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKA_X1zxOQc). It changed my mind once and for all. I don’t know what spirit was speaking to Bentley when he was told the revival wasn’t about getting people to Jesus, but it’s about getting people to believe in “the angel”, but I’ve enough discernment to know it wasn’t God’s Spirit!

This should be elementary, but since sharing this with others I know who’ve supported Lakeland, I was shocked to find it really didn’t bother them in the least! The leader of the revival says it’s not about getting people to Jesus but getting them to believe in “the angel”- SINGULAR. What the heck? Is this the delusion?

Well, I’ve seen the devil tip his hand and I’ve turned the other direction. If God allowed me to see it and turn, He’ll show others too. I’m praying it happens, and I’m telling everyone I know about this.

I apologise to anybody I might have offended or misled in keeping my “open mind” about Lakeland. I would exhort everyone who still thinks this is “from God” to honestly listen to what’s being said on the video. Does the Holy Spirit lead people to Jesus, or angels?

…Todd said that “God” told him “Todd, you’ve got to get the people to believe in the angel.” I don’t know how else to take that. I don’t have a problem with believing in the supernatural, if I didn’t believe in the supernatural I wouldn’t believe in Jesus in the first place!

But look at the statement again. It looks like an agenda to me. Todd and the rest (Bob Jones, etc.) are always talking about their encounters with supernatural entities, but you never once hear how they test what they’re supposedly communicating with. I’ve even heard BJ say that he told a “priest” that was talking to him, “I know that you’re Jesus, but I don’t know who”.

So who, or what are these spirits that are talking to these guys? They aren’t tested, and nobody from the prophetic movement seems to think it’s important that they are. The “credentials” of the preacher passing on the message are good enough (Credentials meaning, how many people do they have following their ministry). Well, that’s not the criteria I read in the Bible for testing the spirits…..

So my point is, the spirits aren’t tested, so all you have to go by is does what they say agree with the Spirit and the Word? Would it be on God’s agenda to get people to believe in “The angel” ? Why? Was that a running theme in the New Testament church? Was Paul bent on getting the “gospel of the angel” to the church at large, or to any of his mission field? I have to say no, it is and always has been and never will be anything other than getting the people to JESUS. If things aren’t going “that direction”, count me out - I ain’t goin’, and I’ll tell anyone else who’ll listen they should skip the trip, too…

In the context of that message Todd was talking about “the angel of the winds of change”, who Todd says is responsible for the revival. Why is an angel responsible for the revival? Why wouldn’t God Himself be responsible? What angelic entity that was of the host of the Lord would even allow a “move of God” to focus on itself? I can think of only one type of angel that would receive any kind of special attention or glory from men - that would be a fallen angel.”

Grace to you brother Mark jr,

    Glenn

I’ve been following this blog for several months, and have been greatly helped by much of what I’ve found here, like “How Long Is It Okay To Stay Adulterated?”

I was following the Lakeland link above, and came across a pointer in the comments there about Watchman Nee, whom, according to the short dramatized devotional put out by Voice of the Martyrs, was a Christian considered so dangerous that the Chinese government that (by my math) the government watched him with more than a thousand different guards each year.

    http://www.persecutionblog.com/2007/01/leading_guards_.html

I’d been meaning to read (or listen to) more about (or from) Watchman Nee for some time, and the Lakeland comment link pointed me to “The Latent Power of the Soul” at http://freethechurch.org/Way/Library/nee.html, which I read an hour ago.

I’m curious to hear what all of you think of it. It seems to directly address the issues focused on by this blog, and was written around 1933.

I’ve been following this blog for several months, and have been greatly helped by some of the posts here, such as “How Long Is It Okay To Stay Adulterated?”. Anyone who’s a fan of Paul Washer and Art Katz can’t be all bad :-)

I found a link to “The Latent Power of the Soul” by Watchman Nee in the comments section of the Lakeland link above, and the topic of that book seems directly applicable to the focus of this blog.

I’ve always wanted to learn more about (and read something by) Watchman Nee after reading a page about him in the Voice of the Martyrs “Extreme Devotion” book [1], so I started with “The Latent Power of the Soul”.

I’m curious to hear what others think about it.

  • Hey Mike.
Sorry about those two comments there; looks like you basically wrote the same thing twice when you noticed that the first one didn’t get through. That’s because you put more than one hyperlink in your post.

I have enjoyed much of Watchman Nee’s writtings, especially the one you mentioned. Art Katz spoke of it often so I went and read it. All I could say was “wow…”
Some folks may recommend to you the ministry and teaching of Witness Lee, who was a disciple of Nee….however, he came up with highly abberant teachings and really turned a genuine movement into a cult, so I cannot recomment Witness Lee as a viable teacher.

I hope to maybe get back on here and write some more, but things are just not “poppin’” for me. We’ll see what happens.
    Thanks for the remarks,
    mark jr.

  • Hey Blog Dawg,

Watchman Nee’s teaching in the city church would fit well with todays IHOP and the NAR. I think he was a bit off on that.

Still its hard to beat the normal christain life. Its hard to teach on Spirit Soul and Body without yanking that off the shelf.
